How it Works

Jo RomanoHello!

I am Jo Romano, Transitions Coach, and I left my second career at the age of 55 to finally give myself the time I needed to rest AND to do what I love. I’ve never been happier and I’m making more money than I did in my 40 hour work week.

When I left my full time position and retired from State government after 35 years, so many people in all sorts of positions working for corporations and agencies were asking me:

Jo, how can you do it? You have two kids in college, no security, how can your leave your job?

It’s too big a risk!

I want to do what you are doing but I am afraid.

Where will the money come from?

Will I be happy with more leisure time on my hands or will I be bored?

I’ve always dreamed of doing more of what interests me, but how can I possibly make a living doing what I love?

I don’t think I know what to do with myself. I’m too young not to work, but what’s next?

These questions came from bright, talented, thoughtful top executives on Broadway, directors of agencies and human resource departments, managers, and front line workers who know how to help others make decisions. But when it came to figuring it out for themselves, they felt stuck, confused and afraid.

The ‘what if’s?’ and ‘ yeah buts’ plagued them and often they found themselves frustrated and trapped.

Does this sound familiar?

I carefully listened to these concerns and I felt their pain because I was asking the same questions and grappling with the same dilemmas, yet knew in my heart that with a plan and access to resources, I could find what’s next for me. And I did it!

I want to help you do it too!

I invite you to join a group of like minded people who are committed and excited to be exploring what’s next.

"The 2Young2Retire course came at just the right time in my life, after I had retired for the third time from paying work in 1998. There have been major shifts in my life, and several minor ones, and I am on course to a whole new direction. Most valuable to me was the focus on the myriad of things still available to us all well into our sixties and beyond. The course served to truly focus me on the ever growing body of work in the area of conscious eldering. I would absolutely recommend the 2Young2Retire course to others."

About Your Coach:

Hello, my name is Josephine Romano and I love to coach Baby Boomers who, like me, are too young to retire young and don’t want to! I am the President of Green Mountain Life Coaching, Consultation, and Training based in Montpelier, VT USA.

I have a passion for helping people see and realize their dreams. I do this by mentoring, providing a shoulder to lean on, and teaching, training, and managing. For 20 years I served as a Superior Court and County Clerk in Vermont. I managed a staff. I improved the juror experience and litigant appreciation of the court system. I also unofficially helped divorced people take healthy steps forward. I retired from the Judiciary (with the party and silver platter engraved with good luck in your retirement). Retire? Well, yes, from the first work chapter in my life.

And no! Enter the second work chapter. For the next l5 years, I served as a Substance Abuse Prevention Consultant for communities, individuals, parents, teens, schools, and businesses. I helped parents and teens delay first substance use to a later date. I also helped adults in the community reduce alcohol and other drug abuse. There is hope and help.

I’m also passionate about developing and delivering interactive trainings to enthusiastic adult learners. My design ensures dialogue education – where the participant and teacher are co-learners. I am master trained in delivering Global Learning Partners, Inc., "Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach" curriculum to managers, teachers, and anyone wanting to grow toward respectful, relevant, and engaged learning. I also promote Health Realization and Bridges Out of Poverty workshops nationally.

I have had challenges in my life that I thought were hardly possible to overcome. I have also had dreams realized. One of my great accomplishments was making a transition from a career in the legal field to a career in the human service field. It was a big shift for me to make as a single parent with two small children.

My life-long challenge has been enduring the stark reality of losing my mother when I was 7 years old and growing up a motherless daughter.

Then another loss occurred which changed my life and my way of thinking about me – a divorce after l0 years of what I thought was a happy marriage.

Starting over again, my dream of sharing my life with children was so strong that I adopted two beautiful, wonderful, loving, and precious children from India. I adopted as a single parent and published my story in “Adoption Means Love – A Triumph of the Heart". Then 6 years later I met my husband and married again – another miracle and story to be told.

When I turned 50, another major obstacle presented itself. My body began to show the wear of arthritis, promising two hip replacements. When I could hardly move after I stood up from a chair, I began to think about my future more deeply.

Security is one of my top values. I asked myself, “I’ll always want to make a little money to live on. How will I be able to make money when I am in my 60’s and 70’s? What will I be able to do without a body that works?” Many would say two healthy, highly successful careers is enough but I don’t think that way. I very much want to live more in leisure. I want to choose what I do with the hours in my day whether it is working a few hours, being with friends and community, or spending quality time with my family.

As life would have it, the next day my husband introduced me to his friend Saul and Saul’s wife, Julia. I asked Julia “What do you do?” She answered, “I am a life coach for students at LandMark College”. Hmm….life coach. I knew intuitively what a life coach was but not precisely. That evening I went online, researched coaching, and within a week I entered Comprehensive Coaching U and the Coaching Institute. I had found my third career as a Professional Life Coach.

Four years later, I officially retired from Substance Abuse Prevention and 35 years of State Service (again with the big party and this time thankfully, without another silver platter) and began the most thrilling part of my life yet – I opened my own Coaching, Consultation, and Training home-based business.

As a lawyer, adoption, parent, and manager Coach, I have combined all of my interests, loves, talents, and skills. I am enjoying the fabulous gifts of my new career. It’s highly successful. I am making more money than ever before.

What I provide for my clients is the structure and belief that they can attain a goal, change their life for the better, and have the lives and work they choose. I have wonderful, motivated clients throughout the nation, each finding value in the relationship we have co-created to reach their vision and goals.

I am adding Later Life Transition Coaching to my resume because when I retired there were Vermont State Commissioners, departmental directors, and state employees coming to me saying, “I can’t believe you are taking the plunge and really retiring.” I also had my own two brothers, one a top executive in NYC and the other third in command of a leading US university, both of them wanting very much to retire and struggling with the change. “But how will I make it work? What about the money? What will I do? I wish I could do that, but I haven’t a clue what is next? I need a coach like you to help me make the transition. I’m scared and confused.”

I understood their fears and feelings because I experienced them myself. I made a commitment that I would coach those like myself, my friends in state government and business men and women, who are ready to take the plunge and figure out what’s next. I offer them a proven step-by-step process to create what is next for them on their own terms.

I enjoy my family, value security, and live my life by serving others. My family helps teens in trouble by welcoming them into our home for shelter. We have done the same for refugees fleeing their country. What I love is seeing people believe in themselves, making healthy thoughts their reality.

My quiet moments are spent gardening, reading, and being with my family and friends. What I hate is injustice and people’s intolerance for differences. I believe in healthy communication as a way to self-respect and happiness. To be vulnerable is to be authentic, thus vulnerability is a place of power, grace, and possibility.
